There's Always a Way to Serve

This week was not like any other week. Oh wait, have I said that before? There really is no such thing as routine. Hermana Borup continues to get better at her work and I continue to find ways to be creative in my failures in the office. Remember last week I spent more than 5 ours paying the electric bill? I came back to the office to see if the amount I was refunded was correct. As it turns out they were 8500 DOP (Dominican pesos = about $180 US) short on the refund. This week I returned to the electric company with Elder Buhler who speaks Spanish. After another hour and a half the manager discovered I was right. She then told us that there was nothing she could do. In other words oh well, better luck next time! Apparently she has no way of refunding the money since it wasn't the same day. I couldn't return on the same day because by the time they finished the 5 hour marathon (a little longer than my time in a marathon by the way)  the office was closed.  This week star...

Haitian Embassy

We had many wonderful experiences this week. I want to share a couple of them with you. As you can see from the pictures, we went to Monte Bonito (a small town outside of Padre Las Casas which is the town where Ramon's family lives). The main purpose of our visit was to work a little more with Ramon and help him gain a little more confidence in making things out of coconuts. He lives in a very small home in Padre Las Casas that does not have an outside area where he can cut and sand. His parents live 8 kms away in a beautiful town on the top of a very steep mountain. They live as farmers and have a lot of outside space. Power or "light" as they call it here, is a problem. It has a way of not being there when you need it. When we left Padre Las Casas there was no power. On the way to Monte Bonito, we noticed a power line that had been knocked down. So, of course when we got to Monte Bonito, "no hay luz!". Most kids ever in a pool

It's hard to believe that another week has gone by. We are just as busy as ever in the office. We hoped that we would be making less mistakes by now but no such luck. We are wondering how long it will take for President Santos to figure out how bad we are with office stuff. President and Hermana Santos have now been here one week and they have not stopped moving. They have now met all of the missionaries in the mission. They held 3 short multi zone meetings so they could meet everyone. They also held an all day meeting with the Zone leaders and the Hermana training leaders. They are loving and warm and are going to do a great job. One of the highlights of the week was seeing President Santos call one of the missionaries that taught and Baptized him and tell him that he is now a mission President. President Santos has been unable to find the missionaries that taught his family 30  years ago. He asked one of the assistance if he knew any way to find them. The Assistant Elder Batema...
