We have Friends
Sorry this is so late coming out this week but we had some visitors and Since then have been trying to catch up. We had another busy non-routine week. The week started with a trip to Padre Las Casas to teach Ramon and Ernestina with the Zone Leaders. The lesson was about the Plan of Salvation. I love teaching this lesson because the doctrine is so simple and clear. When people listen with a sincere heart it feels familiar to them, like they have heard it before. This was just how they received the message as if they had heard it before.
We also taught them about the Word of Wisdom. They accepted and committed to living by this health law. Then we asked them about marriage. They have been living together for over 2 years. They love each other but as is the custom here have not been married. Often the problem is a financial problem. We offered to help them financially if that was the problem in their case. They accepted the offer and said they would get their papers ready to get their appointment for marriage next week. More on this later.
We also visited the little neighborhood where the Haitians live. We made the appointment too early in the day and missed many of the people that were taught last time. They were mostly at work. I was able to find a talk from President Hinkley that was translated into Haitian and talks about the restoration and the atonement. It seemed like those who were there loved hearing the message in their own language. We will return to them this next week. This time later in the evening.
As you can see from the pictures we do have some true friends. The Jim and Margo Ferrin came out to have a visit on Friday. We drove to the Capital to pick them up and spent Saturday showing them some of the touristy things. This country has a very rich history and it was fun to remind ourselves of that history. It was really a treat to spend time with them. We really just spent most of the time being missionaries and dragging the Ferrins along with us.
One of our visits was to Padre Las Casas where we taught Ramon and Ernestina about faith. We did our normal thing by introducing the subject and then show a movie followed by some simple teaching. Two funny things happened. Ramon was not feeling well and at one point left the room to cough. When he came back I asked if everything was good. He replied sarcastically by saying Yea about as good as your Spanish. I took that as him being very good. Jim thought he meant something different. The other funny but nice thing Ramon said was that he told Jim that he sort of likes that our Spanish is not very good because he needs to use the Spirit to help him understand, which he feels has helped his progress.
The work is moving forward, We have loved spending time with the Ferrins. I think our friends got together and thought someone should come to visit us. They all drew straws and the Ferrins lost. That's how we like to think of it because in that scenario we have more than just the Ferrins as friends. Never the less we have loved the time we have been able to spend with them and all that they have done to help us in the work here.
Again sorry this is late. Next blog I will finish up with our adventures with the Ferrins and get you all back up to date. Until then...
Have a great week.
